Subclinical vasculitis as a potential mechanism to explain the heightened cardiovascular risk in rheumatoid arthritis.

چکیده
One decade ago, James Rudd, who also coauthored the present article, published the results of the first prospective trial investigating F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) for imaging of inflammatory changes in carotid artery disease in Circulation.1 Since that time, FDG-PET has emerged as a powerful noninvasive technique to measure vascular inflammation due to atherosclerosis.1–10

Cutaneous manifestations in patients with rheumatoid arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory joint disease with different extra-articular manifestations. Among those extra-articular manifestations, there are significant cutaneous manifestations which may result in first admission to a dermatologist. In this article some specific and non-specific skin lesions of RA such as rheumatoid nodules, exacerbated nodules, rheumatoid vascu...
متن کاملNoninvasive cardiovascular imaging in rheumatoid arthritis: current modalities and the emerging role of magnetic resonance and positron emission tomography imaging.
OBJECTIVES Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with premature atherosclerosis and increased prevalence of cardiovascular disease. The objective of this review is to summarize current and emerging imaging modalities for the evaluation of subclinical atherosclerosis in RA, with an emphasis on potential application of novel modalities, high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging and positron em...
متن کاملUtility of different cardiovascular disease prediction models in rheumatoid arthritis
BACKGROUND Rheumatoid arthritis comes with a 30% higher probability for cardiovascular disease than the general population. Current guidelines advocate for early and aggressive primary prevention and treatment of risk factors in high-risk populations but this excess risk is under-addressed in RA in real life. This is mainly due to difficulties met in the correct risk evaluation. This study aims...
متن کاملImaging Anti-Tumor Necrosis Factor- Therapy Reduces Aortic Inflammation and Stiffness in Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis
Background—Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic inflammatory condition associated with increased cardiovascular risk. This is not fully explained by traditional risk factors, but direct vascular inflammation and aortic stiffening may play a role. We hypothesized that patients with RA exhibit aortic inflammation, which can be reversed with anti-tumor necrosis factortherapy and correlates with...
متن کاملCardiovascular parasympathetic nervous system dysfunction in female rheumatoid arthritis patients.
The autonomic dysfunction has been reported in patients with (rheumatoid arthritis) RA and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) like connective tissue disorders and it may be due to the vasculitis of vasa nervorum and secondary amyloidosis. The pathogenesis may also have an immune component that affects autonomic functions. In the present study, three standard cardiovascular parasympathetic funct...
